The popularity of PRP Therapy has grown tremendously in recent years.  This non invasive procedure has been featured in the media by the increasing utilization of this therapy by famous athletes. This therapy has been utilized to help athletes speed up their own healing process allowing them to return to their sport quicker with minimal to no pain.  PRP is not just for the professional athlete however.  It can be a great benefit to the recreational athletes, weekend warriors, as well as those just looking to promote healing of their specific musculoskeletal condition.  PRP therapy is a treatment which targets the cause of the pain whereas NSAIDS, pain meds, and steroidal injections are a temporary form of symptom management. Steroidal injections have actually been shown to cause damage over time to the actual joint it was intended to improve.

How is PRP Therapy Performed
PRP is a simple painless procedure performed at Comprehensive Healthcare as an outpatient procedure.  We perform an autologous blood draw similar to a routine blood test. The blood is placed in a centrifuge which spins the blood at a very high speed for approximately 15mins.  This causes the blood to separate into 3 layers (see diagram below)  The top layer contains plasma, the middle layer often referred to as the “Buffy Coat” contains platelets, and the bottom layer consists of red blood cells.  The top 2 layers are siphoned off and the red blood cells are then discarded.  Platelets are known for blood clotting but also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which promote the healing of tissue.  The Platelet Rich plasma is then injected into the injured joint, ligament, muscle, or tendon under needle guided imagery.  The entire procedure including the collection of the Platelet Rich Plasma usually takes less than 1 hour.  The number of treatments needed in Altamonte Springs vary based on your specific condition. On average we find that 2-6 treatments are needed over time.

What to Expect After Receiving PRP Therapy
The PRP injection is relatively painless.  You may experience mild discomfort and sometimes a small amount of pain due to the stimulation of the healing process.  We will provide you with a post procedure protocol to follow to ensure proper healing of your specific joint.  Most patients begin to feel less pain and improved function within 4-6 weeks of receiving PRP therapy.
